Job Description

Program Background


EduKAiT is the main platform for the Australian Government’s support to the Kiribati Education sector, specifically the Government of Kiribati and Ministry of Education (MoE), as it implements its Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP 2024-27).

The program will be implemented in two five-year phases over 10 years. Phase 1 includes an emphasis on Literacy and Language for School Years 1-3, and gender and increased English proficiency for School Years 7–9 and address the high Year 9 dropout rate for boys.

The Role

The Curriculum Adviser is an International Specialist position, primarily working remotely with regular in-country visits to Kiribati. This role will provide expert advisory and implementation support to the program and the Ministry of Education (MoE) staff on curriculum-related matters. The ideal candidate will bring extensive expertise in both primary and secondary education sectors, ensuring alignment with international best practices and supporting the development and implementation of effective curricula across these levels.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Curriculum Support:

o   Provide assistance and expert advice to the MoE Curriculum Development and Resource Centre (CDRC) and Mission schools on curriculum-related matters.

o   Assist in the review and refinement of curriculum documents to ensure they are effectively integrated into school programs and aligned with Kiribati Teachers College courses

·         Collaboration and Resource Integration:

o   Collaborate with thematic project teams such as the Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), Climate Change, Language, and Literacy teams to identify and incorporate relevant resources to support the curriculum.

o   Ensure curriculum documents are aligned with best practices particularly in language and literacy and inclusive learning.

·         Monitoring and Evaluation:

o   Work closely with the EduKAiT and MoE Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) teams to establish robust monitoring and evaluation processes.

o   Support the collection of feedback from schools on the use and effectiveness of curriculum materials.

o   Assist in creating mechanisms for continuous improvement based on feedback from teachers and students.

·         Feedback Loops with Schools:

o   Help the CDRC establish and maintain structured feedback loops with schools to ensure timely and useful feedback on how teachers are utilising curriculum documents.

o   Use this feedback to inform future curriculum updates and professional development.

·         Capability Development:

o   Provide expert advice and support for the capability development of nominated MoE and Mission School staff in areas related to curriculum design, review, implementation, and evaluation.

o   Lead workshops and training sessions to enhance the skills of teachers and administrators in curriculum-related areas.

·         TVET Program Introduction:

o   Work alongside the Life Skills and Career Pathways Adviser and CDRC staff  to strengthen and extend existing MoE  Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs in schools.

o   Assist in the integration of life skills and career pathways into the curriculum to better prepare students for the workforce.

o   Establish contact with other Pacific Island TVET programs to share and learn from their TVET experiences and resources.

·         Tertiary and Regional Collaboration:

o   Liaise with tertiary institutions and regional organisations such as the Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) to support efforts aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening curriculum alignment.

o   Foster partnerships that benefit curriculum development and student performance.

·         Student Well-being and Engagement:

o   Work with MoE and EduKAiT staff and  stakeholders to design and implement strategies that enhance student well-being, with a particular focus on improving engagement for boys.

o   Ensure the curriculum supports the holistic development of students, promoting both academic success and personal well-being.

Selection Criteria

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Curriculum Design, Educational Leadership, or a related field (Master’s preferred)

Demonstrated Experience in

  • Extensive experience in curriculum development – design, implementation and evaluation – in primary and secondary education sectors
  • Experience with monitoring and evaluation practices in educational settings
  • Experience in teacher training and professional development

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of TVET programs, student career pathways, and tertiary education linkages.
  • Knowledge of climate education materials
  • Familiarity with English language education (including contemporary approaches to literacy) and vocational training
  • Strong understanding of inclusive education principles, particularly regarding gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI)
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with diverse teams and stakeholders
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Ability to foster feedback systems and implement data-driven improvements.
