TITLE: Climate and Environment Specialist
LOCATION: Erbil / roving: Anbar, Ninewa, Kirkuk, and Salah al-Din Governorates

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Project Manager, the Climate and Environment Specialist will lead on providing backstopping and hands-on technical supervision and support for mainstreaming Climate-Sensitive approach throughout the project’s livelihoods and economic support: the project will design and implement three tracks for supporting livelihoods and economic reintegration for 933 individuals (at least 50% women, 30% youth 18 – 29 years); Track (1): Cash for Work for 500 individuals, Track (2): Demand Driven Vocational Training and Employment for 188 individuals, Track (3): Business Support for 245 individuals. The three tracks will be implemented in parallel to enable timely completion. The project aims to address the reintegration needs of Iraqi nationals returning from Northeast Syria (NES), including community members and those perceived to be formerly associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), cleared by authorities, and are sustainably reintegrated back into communities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Support the implementation of the activities conducive to meet project goals in all targeted areas.
- Support the project team with climate sensitive and gender-sensitive assessments. This will include the following; Climate-Sensitive Community Needs Assessment to identify the ideas for climate sensitive cash-for-work schemes; and Climate-Sensitive and Green Economy-based Market Needs Assessment to identify the most promising economic sectors and ideas. The report should identify professions that can be targeted for providing vocational training and ideas that can be converted into sustainable businesses (e.g. green economy, renewable energy, waste management) while considering the community acceptance and market demand. It should also include a rapport with potential employers willing to provide sustainable employment opportunities.
- Travel between project implementation locations in Anbar, Ninewa, Kirkuk, and Salah al-Din Governorates ensuring smooth project delivery.
- Work closely with Project Manager and related project staff on the identification of gender needs of communities and gaps in protection services within areas of intervention.
- Conducting awareness raising sessions with the community focused on gender equality initiatives that target gender norms and engages both men and women.
- Provide follow up and reporting on progress.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Bachelor’s degree in any area of knowledge, preferably in International Development Studies or other studies related to climate, environment, or sustainability.
- Experience with the development and use of climate and environment assessment tools and approaches, delivery of training and facilitation of knowledge development (please mention in your CV or cover letter: titles, objectives, description, and duration of at least 2 similar projects that you were responsible for).
- Experience in conflict resolution and problem solving is an asset.
- Writing and verbal communication skills in both Arabic and English.
- Right to live and work in Iraq, with the ability to travel within and outside the KRI region.
- Willing to start work on short notice.
